1. Write down what should change

Do you want clearer explanations, more predictable fees or regular reporting? Make your expectations specific. This helps your next engagement fit your needs rather than merely being different.

2. Review existing arrangements

Check your current engagement, any notice requirements and work already in progress. Agree who completes each period so work is neither duplicated nor left between providers.

3. Collect handover information

Gather the latest completed annual accounts, returns, current bookkeeping, open items and correspondence. Ask what exports are available. Use appropriate authorisations rather than sharing passwords.

4. Document the handover

Set a changeover date and record the last processed period, missing information and responsibilities. Coordinate contact between your old and new provider. Backlogs require a separate assessment.

5. Start with clear working arrangements

Choose a contact person and practical routine. Discuss scope, price, software and extra work. Use our downloadable switching checklist to prepare for the conversation.

This guide helps you prepare. Your circumstances determine which administrative and tax steps are appropriate. Discuss specific decisions with an adviser.
